Papers, 1857-1859.

Collection contains two notebooks (1857-1859) of Rockwell, an officer in the Civil War, and mining professor at Yale and M.I.T. The notebooks contain diagrams, drawings and detailed notes about mining operations in South Wales, England and other locations. Rockwell drew very detailed sketches of mines and equipment such as shafts, blast furnaces, coke ovens, and tunnels. The papers also discuss the living and working conditions of miners. Three loose papers with more mining information were found inside one of the volumes.
